Aerion is a new cross-platform open-source email client initially developed for Linux but also available on macOS and Windows. The project is backed by 3DF, an IT consulting firm from Hong Kong, and targets users who value privacy and ease of use. The app’s source code is available on GitHub, allowing independent security verification.

Unlike Geary, long considered one of the best lightweight Linux email clients, Aerion offers a more stable interface and better window management. For example, in tiling window managers, Aerion correctly displays the email list and sidebar without occupying the entire screen when opening a message. The app also doesn’t require additional commands to launch on distributions like Pop!_OS.

Aerion’s functionality is streamlined: it supports multiple accounts, text formatting, theme customization, a focus mode for single emails, spam filtering, and tracking element removal. The interface remains intuitive, and installation is possible via Flathub on most modern Linux distributions. Despite its pre-release status, the app already demonstrates high stability.

For users who prioritize minimalism and efficiency, Aerion could be a worthy replacement for Geary and other email clients. It supports all major email services, including Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, and ProtonMail, as well as standard IMAP and POP protocols. The focus mode, which hides all interface elements except the current email, is particularly useful for those handling large volumes of correspondence.
