Amazon has confirmed the development of Fire OS 16, a new version of the operating system for Fire TV devices. The update is based on Android 16 and includes several improvements from Android 15. The details emerged in updated developer documentation, dispelling rumors about a potential platform abandonment following the Vega OS announcement.
Earlier, the company had introduced Fire OS 14, which became available on the first smart TVs in early 2025. The new OS version is expected to roll out gradually, with the first devices running Fire OS 16 likely appearing no earlier than next year. It remains unclear whether updates will be limited to smart TVs, as was the case with the previous version.
The announcement of Fire OS 16 underscores Amazon’s strategy to develop its own Android-based ecosystem. The company continues to integrate Google’s latest technologies, adapting them for its devices. Fire TV users can anticipate improvements in performance, security, and functionality in future updates.
