ANBERNIC RG Rotate: Compact Android Console with Unique Design and Trade-offs

ANBERNIC has introduced the RG Rotate, a portable gaming console with a unique design inspired by old mobile phones like the Motorola Flipout. The device features a rotating screen that opens like a folding knife, revealing physical control buttons. While this form factor looks original and even resembles a stress-relief toy, it comes with several practical limitations.

The RG Rotate runs on a Unisoc Tiger T618 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, enabling it to run emulators for PS1, Nintendo 64, and PSP. However, performance falls short for more demanding platforms like PS2 and GameCube, with most games experiencing noticeable lag. The 720x720-pixel screen with a 1:1 aspect ratio suits older portable consoles but appears unusual in modern games due to significant image cropping.

The device’s main drawbacks are its uncomfortable buttons and poor ergonomics. The physical buttons are made of hard plastic and produce loud clicks, while the console’s small size causes discomfort after just 20 minutes of play. The 2000mAh battery provides only 3.5–4 hours of use under moderate load, and the 10W charging takes over an hour. The lack of analog sticks further limits compatibility with certain games.

Despite its flaws, the RG Rotate stands out with its low price (around $90) and unique design. For those prioritizing performance and comfort, alternatives like the AYANEO Pocket Air Mini, with its more powerful hardware and 4:3 screen, may be preferable. However, for retro gaming enthusiasts and fans of experimental form factors, the ANBERNIC RG Rotate could be an intriguing option.
