Android Auto with AI and New Interface: What’s Changing in Google’s Car Systems

Google has announced a major update to Android Auto, designed to elevate in-car infotainment systems to new heights. The focus is on deep AI integration and interface personalization, with the rollout slated for later this year. The update will impact both embedded systems (Android Automotive) and classic smartphone-based solutions.

One of the most striking changes is the introduction of adaptive widgets, which users can create using text prompts. For example, you could generate a widget to display weather with outdoor activity recommendations or customize a panel for quick access to routes and favorite establishments. The interface will also undergo visual refinements: rounded element corners, dynamic color schemes, and a three-panel layout featuring maps, media players, and smart home controls will make it more intuitive.

Navigation has received special attention: the updated Google Maps now renders terrain, buildings, and other infrastructure details more accurately—critical for navigating complex urban intersections. Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, will automate routine tasks, from adjusting vehicle settings (e.g., sunroof or lighting) to ordering food via DoorDash with real-time tracking on your smartphone. Voice prompts will also become clearer, shifting from mile-based distances to landmark-based directions.

Despite ambitious plans, the update’s rollout depends on automaker support. While the demo on the Volvo EX60 showcased flawless functionality, mass-market models may face limitations. Google has not specified which vehicles will receive the update first, leaving users in anticipation.
