Anthropic Accused of Misleading Users Over Claude Max Subscription Limits

US-based AI solutions developer Anthropic has found itself at the center of a scandal following the filing of a class-action lawsuit accusing the company of misleading advertising regarding the usage limits of its paid subscriptions for the Claude AI assistant. The plaintiff, programmer Carl Hahn, asserts that the actual limits for the Max 5x and Max 20x plans do not match those stated in the company’s marketing materials.

According to the lawsuit, the Max 20x plan, priced at $200 per month, is supposed to offer a 20x increase in usage limits compared to the base Pro plan ($17–20 per month). However, in practice, users receive only a 6–8x increase. A similar situation exists with the Max 5x plan ($100 per month), where the actual increase is 3.5x instead of the advertised fivefold limit. Hahn noted that during intensive coding sessions, he quickly exhausted his weekly limit, raising doubts about the honesty of the company’s claims.

The lawsuit also highlights a lack of transparency in how usage limits are calculated, as Anthropic’s website does not provide a clear explanation of how request or session limits are determined. Users who hit these limits are forced to purchase additional credits, which has led to dissatisfaction. The company reserves the right to adjust limits at its discretion, further eroding customer trust.

The lawsuit was filed in the Northern District Court of California and seeks class-action status for all users who subscribed to the Max 5x or Max 20x plans since April 2025. The total claimed damages exceed $5 million. At the time of publication, Anthropic representatives had not commented on the situation.
