Apple Updates Screen Time: Parental Criticism and Expectations

Apple has announced updates to its Screen Time parental control feature as part of the iOS 27 release this fall. However, experts argue the changes fail to address key issues users have faced for years. Screen Time has been criticized for unstable performance, vulnerabilities, and a complex interface that complicates effective child device management.

Among the new features are "Ask to Browse," requiring parental approval for new websites, and expanded Communication Safety, which will now block not only explicit images but also violent content. Yet, users note that children often bypass restrictions, such as by using web versions of apps instead of mobile ones. Another persistent issue is the ability to redownload deleted apps without permission if they were previously installed on another family device.

Parents also report difficulties setting time limits and managing contacts. For instance, Communication Limits, which restricts a child’s contact circle, works unreliably and may block important calls. While Apple promises improved device synchronization, many believe the company has long ignored these problems. Experts emphasize that reliable screen time control requires a deeper system overhaul, not just cosmetic updates.
