Apple Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI for Theft of Hardware Secrets

Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of stealing trade secrets related to hardware developments. According to Apple, former employees who joined OpenAI systematically copied and shared confidential information about unreleased products, engineering presentations, and technical specifications.

The lawsuit mentions Tang Tan, OpenAI’s chief hardware engineer, and Chan Liu, who joined the startup in January after leaving Apple. Liu is specifically accused of continuing to access Apple’s internal systems post-resignation and downloading dozens of files containing secret data. He allegedly also instructed a former colleague on bypassing Apple’s security systems before her transition to OpenAI.

Apple claims OpenAI deliberately recruits former Apple employees, encouraging them to bring confidential materials, such as prototypes and CAD models, to job interviews. The lawsuit also alleges OpenAI attempted to use Apple’s partners to execute proprietary manufacturing processes for the startup’s benefit. Apple states that over 400 of its former employees now work at OpenAI.

An OpenAI spokesperson denied the allegations, stating the company has no interest in others’ trade secrets. Apple, meanwhile, emphasized its commitment to protecting its innovations and intellectual property by all available means. OpenAI’s first hardware products are expected next year, but Apple questions their originality, asserting they are based on stolen technologies.
