Apple Ignored tvOS 17 at WWDC 2024: What It Means

At WWDC 2024, Apple rolled out major updates for most of its operating systems, but tvOS stood out as a notable exception. Unlike iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and iPadOS 18—which introduced AI-driven features and interface enhancements—tvOS received no mention during the main presentation. The platform was only indirectly referenced in a graphic listing all Apple OS versions, where it was labeled as tvOS 17.

Experts note that tvOS significantly trails competitors like Amazon Fire TV and Google TV, especially in smart home integration. While the Apple TV 4K currently supports camera video streams and smart home automation, its functionality remains limited compared to Apple’s mobile devices. Expectations for WWDC 2024 included expanded platform capabilities, such as deeper HomeKit integration, but these updates failed to materialize.

The core issue with tvOS lies in hardware limitations. The latest Apple TV 4K, released in 2022, is powered by the outdated A15 Bionic chip. According to analyst Mark Gurman, a new Apple TV model is ready for release, but Apple has yet to announce it. Without hardware upgrades, tvOS cannot support AI-driven features like Apple Intelligence, putting it at a disadvantage against competitors.

For now, users can only expect minor improvements, such as enhanced text scaling for accessibility, which was announced earlier. tvOS 17 is expected to enter public beta later, but significant changes are unlikely without a device update. Apple may delay major platform updates until the next-generation Apple TV launches, potentially by the end of the year.
