Apple Reduces AI Infrastructure Costs for Small Developers

Apple has announced a reduction in barriers for developers looking to integrate artificial intelligence into their applications. At WWDC, the company introduced a program that grants developers with fewer than 2 million initial App Store downloads free access to Foundation Models running on the Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. This initiative enables small teams to leverage cutting-edge AI technologies without incurring additional cloud service costs.

Apple’s new initiative mirrors its Small Business Program, where the company already offers reduced commissions for emerging developers. Now, these benefits extend to free access to AI models, simplifying experimentation with new technologies. This year, Apple also expanded Foundation Models’ capabilities, adding support for images and server-side models, allowing integration with cloud solutions from third-party providers.

Apple’s decision aligns with a broader industry trend where the cost of AI experimentation has become a critical factor. Many companies, including Meta* and Amazon, have abandoned internal AI token usage ratings, while Uber recently admitted to exhausting its annual AI budget in just four months.
