Apple Implements AI to Create Safari Extensions on User Request

Apple is leveraging artificial intelligence to tackle Safari’s long-standing issue: a shortage of extensions. Unlike Chrome and Firefox, which offer thousands of add-ons, Safari has lagged due to Apple’s strict development requirements. Now, users can describe the functionality they need, and AI powered by Apple Intelligence will generate the extension automatically.

In a demonstration, Apple showcased the creation of a "Recipe Keeper" extension, which saves recipes from web pages and allows users to add notes. If the feature proves stable, it could partially offset the lack of popular extensions from Chrome and Firefox ecosystems. It also opens new opportunities for users to create custom tools using AI.

Beyond extension generation, Safari is gaining additional AI features. For example, the browser will automatically group tabs by topics, such as clustering all sneaker-related pages under a "sneakers" category. While competitors have introduced similar features, Apple is adopting a more cautious approach to avoid premature solutions.

Another innovation is the "Notify Me" function, which tracks changes on websites based on user-defined criteria, such as price drops or product availability. Safari will also automatically update compromised passwords via the Passwords app, using AI to navigate sites and log into accounts. This feature is already available in Chrome but currently works only on supported platforms.
