Apple Implements iPhone Theft Protection Following Android’s Lead

Apple is preparing to release a new iPhone theft protection feature that will automatically lock the smartphone upon detecting suspicious activity. According to 9to5Mac, the company is testing technology similar to Android’s Theft Detection Lock to close an existing security gap.

Currently, iPhones are equipped with tools like Stolen Device Protection and Find My, which help secure data in cases of loss or theft. However, these mechanisms are ineffective if a thief snatches an unlocked smartphone from the owner’s hands. The new feature will use accelerometer data and other sensors to recognize sudden movements typical of theft.

The system is also expected to incorporate data from paired Apple Watches to improve the accuracy of detecting suspicious situations. If the iPhone is taken to an unfamiliar location, the feature will not only lock the device but also restrict access to critical settings, similar to Stolen Device Protection. It remains unclear when the update will be available to users, but development is already underway.
