Bad Magpie: Indie Game About Avoiding Emotions with Unique Gameplay

London-based indie studio Milktooth has released its debut game Bad Magpie, blending chaotic gameplay with deep emotional themes. The project draws from the developers' personal experiences of loss and breakups. At its core, the story follows a magpie that wreaks havoc to avoid painful emotions.

The gameplay echoes Untitled Goose Game, but with a more serious tone. Players control the bird as it sets objects on fire, smashes barriers, and collects shiny crystals to reach a giant star. Beneath this chaos lies an attempt to fill an inner void caused by loss. The developers intentionally designed the game to be nonlinear, allowing players to gradually uncover its deeper meaning.

The art style of Bad Magpie features hand-painted sketches, giving the game a lighthearted feel despite its heavy themes. The demo includes small puzzles, such as using a megaphone to scare away mice or activating piano keys with books. The creators compare their project to Shadow of the Colossus, where aggression masks profound emotional undertones.

The team behind Bad Magpie hopes the game will not only entertain but also resonate with players' personal experiences. According to design director Daisy Fernandez, the goal is to show that avoiding emotions doesn't resolve issues—it only temporarily distracts from them.
