Bluetooth Multipoint: Why Switching Between Devices Is Unstable

Bluetooth Multipoint technology enables a single device, such as headphones, to maintain simultaneous connections with multiple sources—like a smartphone, laptop, or tablet. This is convenient when you need to quickly switch between a phone call and listening to music on a computer. However, in practice, the feature often malfunctions: audio may drop, switching occurs with delays, and notifications from one device interrupt playback from another.

The issue lies in the fact that Multipoint is not part of the official Bluetooth specification. It is not a standard but rather an implementation of existing Bluetooth profiles, adapted differently by each manufacturer. For example, Apple calls this feature Seamless Device Switching, while Sony simply refers to it as 'Dual Device Connection.' Due to the lack of a unified approach, interactions between devices from different brands often prove unpredictable.

Bluetooth uses different profiles for various tasks: A2DP for streaming audio, HFP for voice calls, and AVRCP for playback control. When headphones are connected to multiple devices, they must independently determine which profile to activate at any given moment. However, manufacturers implement switching logic differently, leading to conflicts. For instance, an incoming call may interrupt video playback on a laptop, or a phone notification may mute music.

The only way to achieve stable Multipoint performance is by using devices within the same ecosystem, such as Apple or Samsung. In closed systems, the manufacturer controls all aspects of interaction, minimizing glitches. Otherwise, users must hope for a shift to more modern standards like LE Audio, which promises improved sound quality, connection stability, and energy efficiency.
