ChatGPT Enhances Memory: AI Now Remembers and Updates User Data

OpenAI has announced a new memory architecture for ChatGPT, enabling the chatbot to more effectively retain and utilize user information. The system builds on the existing "Dreaming" process but now allows the AI to not only collect data from conversations but also update it based on context.

A key improvement is the ability to automatically update memory. For instance, if a user plans a trip, ChatGPT previously only remembered the travel details without tracking its completion. Now, the AI adjusts the data independently: after the trip ends, the phrasing shifts from "You are traveling to Singapore" to "You visited Singapore in July 2026."

Users will also gain access to a summary of the data ChatGPT stores about them, allowing manual additions or edits. They can specify which topics the AI should consider when generating responses. OpenAI notes that the new architecture not only expands memory capabilities but also optimizes computational resources, enabling the feature’s expansion to free accounts.

The update is already available to ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers in the U.S. The feature will roll out to other countries and free or basic-tier users in the coming weeks.
