Quick answer
According to the latest Crunchbase data, US startups led by Black founders have raised $643 million since the beginning of 2024. This is the highest figure since 2022, when investments totaled $653 million. For comparison, these startups secured $942 million throughout 2023, accounting for just 0.32% of the total $290 billion in venture funding.
The growth was primarily driven by several large deals. Among them are the $350 million raised by SambaNova, a company developing AI hardware, $75 million secured by Noviq, a sports prediction platform, and $47 million allocated to Harper, a startup specializing in AI-powered insurance. Despite the record numbers, experts emphasize that the share of Black founders in total investments remains negligible.
Gene Teare, Head of Research at Crunchbase, highlighted systemic challenges faced by these entrepreneurs. According to her, key barriers include limited access to professional networks, a lack of early investor connections, and intense competition in the AI sector. "The venture capital market has been in a downturn for nine consecutive quarters, but the decline in investments for Black-led startups outpaces the overall trend," she noted.
Experts also point out that the current situation reflects broader market polarization: large deals are concentrated among a few projects, while most startups struggle to attract capital. It remains unclear whether this positive momentum will continue in the coming months or prove to be a temporary surge.
