Comcast Turns Xfinity Routers into Motion Sensors with Privacy Risks

U.S. telecom giant Comcast has introduced a new feature for its Xfinity Gateway routers that transforms them into motion sensors. The Wi-Fi Motion option, included in the free Xfinity Shield package, uses radio signal analysis between the router and connected devices to detect movements in the home. Users receive alerts via the Xfinity mobile app, while the system neither records video nor identifies individuals.

The feature must be explicitly enabled by the user and is not active by default. The Xfinity Shield package also includes tools for phishing and malware protection, as well as screen time controls for children. For enhanced security, a paid Shield Select tier offers cameras, sensors, and 24/7 response services.

However, privacy experts highlight potential risks. The Wi-Fi Motion terms of service state that Comcast may share motion data with third parties, including law enforcement, without notifying the owner. This raises concerns despite the company’s claims that the feature does not store personal data.

According to John Gizelman, Vice President of Connectivity & Platforms at Comcast, the innovation aims to turn home networks into security tools. Critics, however, argue that such technologies could become another data collection channel, especially amid the growing demand for smart home solutions.
