Cursor Unveils Origin Platform Amid GitHub Outage

Cursor has introduced Origin, a code hosting platform launched amid a major GitHub outage. The incident, lasting nearly seven hours, disrupted key services, including APIs, authentication systems, and Copilot. While unrelated, the timing drew attention to Origin as a potential alternative.

Origin integrates directly with the Cursor editor and offers standard features like repository management, pull requests, and access control. Its standout feature is built-in AI agent support, enabling automated code analysis, fixes, and even branch creation. The platform already supports integrations with Vercel, Depot, and Buildkite, allowing teams to maintain existing CI/CD pipelines without changes.

Cursor does not require users to abandon GitHub entirely. Repositories can be synchronized between platforms, keeping GitHub as the source of truth. This reduces migration risks and simplifies Origin adoption. This strategy allows Cursor to avoid pitfalls of full platform transitions while focusing on improving user experience.

Origin’s development was enabled by the acquisition of Graphite, a startup specializing in code review tools. Integrating AI agents into the review process addresses the growing volume of AI-generated code. Cursor reports that up to 35% of pull requests in their environment are now created by autonomous agents, shifting reviews from discussions to planning tasks.

Despite its potential, Origin carries risks. Cursor’s recent acquisition by SpaceX raises questions about long-term strategy and code security. Nonetheless, the platform has already attracted major clients, including companies spending over $100K annually on development tools.
