Ex-Sequoia Capital Head Roelof Botha Joins SpaceX Board of Directors

SpaceX has announced the addition of Roelof Botha, former managing partner of venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, to its board of directors. The appointment was formalized in an official filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Botha will fill a vacant seat on the board and join the audit committee, where his expertise in public company governance will be a key asset.

Roelof Botha is widely recognized as one of Silicon Valley’s top investors. Over his 20+ year tenure at Sequoia Capital, he played a pivotal role in funding major tech companies, including SpaceX’s $1.5 billion investment round in 2019. Pre-IPO reports valued Sequoia’s stake in SpaceX at approximately 1.5%, exceeding $20 billion. Botha also shares a long-standing professional relationship with Elon Musk, having led PayPal’s finance division in 2000 when Musk served as CEO.

Botha will join a board of influential figures, including close associates of Musk and top SpaceX executives. However, SpaceX’s governance structure remains unique: Musk retains over 80% of voting shares, granting him near-total control over strategic decisions. Botha’s appointment may signal a step toward reinforcing corporate governance frameworks, especially following the company’s recent public listing.

SEC filings also reveal that a relative of Botha has worked at SpaceX in corporate operations since January 2025. While his compensation exceeded the $120,000 reporting threshold, the company emphasized that it aligns with industry standards for similar roles.
