EU Prepares Laws to Reduce Dependence on Big Tech and Boost Homegrown Tech

The European Commission has proposed new regulations designed to reduce the EU’s reliance on foreign tech giants. Key measures include restricting the participation of American and other non-European companies in tenders for critical IT solutions for public sector needs.

A central aspect of the initiative is the requirement to safeguard against external interference in technological infrastructure. This includes mechanisms to prevent remote service disruptions—known as a “kill switch”—which non-European players could exploit in the event of conflicting interests.

The proposed measures are currently under discussion with EU member states. Experts note that implementing such initiatives could take years, given the complexity of aligning interests across countries and industries. However, the very introduction of these draft laws signals Europe’s determination to strengthen its position in the global tech race.
