GitHub Copilot Shifts to Token-Based Pricing: Developers Outraged by Price Surge

Microsoft is overhauling the pricing model for its developer tool, GitHub Copilot, transitioning from a fixed subscription to a token-based billing system on June 1. The move has triggered widespread frustration, especially among individual developers and small teams.

Previously, users paid a flat fee of around $10–$20 per month for unlimited access to Copilot’s features. Now, costs will scale with the number of tokens processed, potentially leading to significant expense spikes. On forums like Reddit and X, developers report monthly bills jumping from $30 to $750 or even $3,000.

Microsoft has not disclosed details of its prior cost structure, but the fixed-price model evidently failed to cover processing expenses. Critics argue the company encouraged inefficient tool usage and is now shifting financial responsibility to users. Meanwhile, supporters of the change note that steep cost increases primarily affect those using Copilot inefficiently—such as for "vibe coding" with excessive iterations.
