Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky Launches Own AI Lab

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has announced plans to establish an in-house artificial intelligence lab. The initiative, first reported by Bloomberg, has been confirmed by a source close to the company. Chesky, who has previously supported AI startups, is now taking a more hands-on approach by investing in proprietary technology development.

While Airbnb already uses AI tools for coding automation, it has not partnered with large language model (LLM) developers. Chesky stated that existing solutions did not align with the company’s needs. The new lab will focus on developing innovative products, potentially in user interaction and interface design—key areas for Airbnb’s growth.

Chesky has extensive experience engaging with AI industry leaders. He has known OpenAI CEO Sam Altman since 2006, when both participated in the Y Combinator program. Later, Chesky advised Altman on managing rapidly growing tech companies and even played a role in Altman’s return as OpenAI CEO after a boardroom conflict.

Despite this new venture, Chesky will remain Airbnb’s CEO and will not personally lead the lab. The future head of the division will operate under intense competition with other AI labs and Chesky’s meticulous oversight, known for his hands-on management style.
