GM Deploys V2G Technology to Offset AI Data Center Energy Consumption

General Motors has announced the launch of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology for its electric vehicles to offset the growing energy consumption of AI data centers. The company is enabling bidirectional charging for owners of Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC electric vehicles, allowing them to feed stored energy back into the grid during peak load periods. GM estimates that over 250,000 EVs in the U.S. already support this feature, with their combined capacity capable of powering up to 120,000 homes for a week.

V2G integration projects are being tested in California and Michigan. In Northern California, GM is collaborating with PG&E to create a local fleet of 52,000 electric vehicles that will help balance grid load by 2030. In Michigan, the company is conducting trials involving 30 employee homes to evaluate the technology’s real-world effectiveness. Beyond grid support, V2G offers financial benefits to EV owners by reducing electricity costs.

GM is also developing industrial energy storage solutions, including sodium-ion batteries, which are more cost-effective and safer than lithium-ion alternatives. The company partners with Peak Energy and Redwood Materials to create energy storage systems using recycled batteries. Additionally, GM introduced the Energy Pass feature, simplifying charging and payment for EV owners through a unified app.
