Google Chrome Secretly Installs AI Model on User Devices

Google has started silently deploying the Gemini Nano AI model in the Chrome browser for select users. The approximately 4GB model is installed on devices without notification or opt-out options if hardware specifications are met. Gemini Nano operates locally and is intended for tasks such as analyzing smartphone screenshots on Pixel devices, summarizing audio recordings, and assisting with message composition.

According to privacy expert Alexander Hanff, the model’s installation may violate transparency and lawfulness principles under Europe’s GDPR. Google states that the model is automatically removed when resources are insufficient, and since February 2024, users have been able to disable it in Chrome settings. However, many may have been unaware of its presence on their devices until then.

Removing Gemini Nano requires manual steps. On Windows, users must disable the feature in browser settings, turn off the Optimization Guide flag, and delete the model’s folder. The process is similar on macOS, though the file path differs. Experts also note that local AI operations may impact device performance and battery life, particularly on lower-end configurations.
