Google Tests Enhanced Control Over Android Backups

Google is preparing an update for the Android backup system that will give users more control over the data they save. Currently, all categories—such as calls, messages, device settings, and apps—are automatically backed up to the cloud without any selection options.

The beta version of Google Play Services (v26.22.30) reveals changes that allow users to disable individual data categories. For example, users can exclude unnecessary files from backups, freeing up space in Google One storage and speeding up the copying process. If a category is disabled, the system will prompt users to confirm the deletion of already saved cloud data.

Previously, Google tested the ability to disable backups for specific apps, but this feature has not yet been released in the stable version. The new update could be a logical extension of this initiative, offering users more flexibility in managing their data.

It is currently unclear when the new feature will be available to all users, but its appearance in the beta version indicates active development. Google will continue to monitor the progress of this option and provide updates on further changes.
