Google Enhances Gemini Voice Assistant for Smart Homes

Google has introduced a series of improvements for its Gemini voice assistant, now available within the smart home ecosystem. The primary focus is on enhancing the naturalness of conversations and user interaction convenience.

One of the key innovations is the detailed weather forecasting. The assistant now provides hourly data, including the likelihood of rain at specific times, and accommodates user preferences for temperature units (Celsius or Fahrenheit). Media content searches have also become more flexible: Gemini understands free-form queries, whether for trending music videos, cooking tutorials, or subscription-based movies. Users can refine their queries during the conversation, and volume control has become more intuitive—simply saying "lower the volume" suffices.

News briefings are now interactive. Users can listen to curated news from selected sources and request additional details on topics of interest without interrupting the conversation. Google has also optimized the assistant’s core performance: processing reminders, alarms, and lists is faster, and stability has improved in noisy environments or when interacting with multiple smart devices.

The update is distributed via the Google Home app version 4.18. The app’s interface now features an updated subscription plan selection screen, simplifying the comparison of options when changing payment periods.
