Google Tightens Android App Sideloading Rules: What’s Changing

Google is rolling out new security measures for sideloading apps on Android via APK files, drawing criticism from open-source developers. Beginning September 2024, developers will need to register an account, verify their identity, and pay a $25 fee to obtain "verified" status for their apps.

Users will still be able to install APKs from unverified developers, but the process will become more cumbersome. For instance, a 24-hour delay will be imposed before installing such apps. After this initial wait, users can permanently allow unverified APK installations, though this adds friction for advanced users and developers.

Developers of popular open-source apps, such as NewPipe (an ad-free YouTube client), have already started warning users about the upcoming changes. Workarounds, including using ADB for app installations, are being suggested. Similar alerts have appeared in other projects, like the whoBIRD bird-watching app.

The F-Droid community, a hub for open-source apps, previously criticized Google’s initiative, calling Android’s openness claims "misleading." Experts warn that the new rules could marginalize alternative app stores and limit opportunities for independent developers.
