U.S. State Department Launches Online System for Fast Passport Renewals

The U.S. State Department has implemented a digital platform for passport renewals, fully eliminating paper-based documentation. To renew a passport, users simply create an account on the MyTravelGov portal, upload a digital photo, and pay the fee via credit card or ACH transfer. The procedure takes about 40 minutes but can be completed faster if all documents are ready.

Online renewal is not universally available: the system only supports standard 10-year passports issued within the last 15 years. Applicants must be over 25, reside in the U.S., and have no changes to personal details (name, gender, date of birth). Importantly, the existing passport is invalidated upon application submission, so travel plans within the next 8 weeks are not recommended.

Processing times for the new passport remain unchanged: 4 to 6 weeks for standard service. Expedited processing still requires an in-person visit and an additional fee. The platform also supports renewal of passport cards, valid for travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, but not for air travel.
