The Nara Prefecture Cultural Assets Research Institute has implemented advanced technology to search for archaeological sites. The method is based on analyzing high-precision 3D geodata using artificial intelligence algorithms. The system can identify previously unknown ancient burials and other historical structures hidden beneath soil layers or vegetation.

According to lead researcher Yuichi Takada, the new approach significantly reduces the time required for initial territory analysis. Traditional archaeological methods require lengthy fieldwork and manual data processing, whereas the AI system can process large volumes of information in a short time. This is particularly relevant for regions with rich historical heritage, where manual searches may take decades.

The developers emphasize that the technology can be adapted for use not only by professional archaeologists but also by enthusiasts. Open access to geodata analysis tools will attract a broader range of participants, including local residents and volunteers. This creates the prerequisites for forming citizen science in archaeology and cultural heritage protection.

The project also demonstrates the potential of an interdisciplinary approach combining IT technologies and humanities. The use of artificial intelligence in archaeology opens new horizons for historical research, allowing the discovery of objects that previously went unnoticed due to the limitations of traditional methods.
