The IEEE TryEngineering OnCampus international educational initiative reached seven universities in 2023, offering students a deep dive into modern technologies. Funded by the IEEE Innovation Committee, the program focuses on developing practical engineering, IT, and related skills among middle and high school students.
As part of the project, universities in Croatia, Egypt, Oman, Malaysia, Greece, and Hong Kong hosted two- and seven-day intensive workshops. Participants explored the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum computing, and IoT, while also working on projects such as building electronic circuits, controlling LED brightness, and developing microcontroller-based solutions. Special emphasis was placed on career opportunities in tech: students met industry representatives, visited production facilities, and toured research centers.
At the University of Zagreb, for example, 25 students aged 10–14 attended masterclasses on AI and astronomy, while in Egypt, students at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport studied Ohm’s law and radio communication. In Oman, participants from Majan University College competed in creating IoT devices, and in Malaysia, students learned the basics of quantum intelligence through interactive simulations.
The program also returned to Hong Kong and Greece, where similar events were held last year. In Hong Kong, 55 students from 41 schools worked on AI-driven image and music generation projects, while at the University of Ioannina (Greece), students explored microchips, augmented reality, and 3D printing. Post-program surveys revealed that around 75% of participants rated the program 4 or 5 out of 5, praising its organization and the practical value of the knowledge gained.
Organizers emphasize that TryEngineering OnCampus not only develops technical skills but also inspires the next generation of engineers and IT professionals. In 2024, new universities will join the program, including established venues in Croatia, Egypt, Oman, and Hong Kong.
