SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed that U.S. military contractors used Starlink satellite internet in strike drones, violating the company’s corporate policies. He stated that a separate platform, Starshield, was developed specifically for defense sector needs and approved by the Pentagon for such purposes.
Musk emphasized that Starlink was originally created for civilian use and should not be employed in weapon systems. The unauthorized use of the network in military operations without SpaceX’s approval risks damaging the company’s reputation and could lead to legal consequences. While SpaceX previously stated it does not provide services for strike drones, the situation with contractors highlights the challenges of controlling the end-use of technologies.
Experts note that the incident reflects a growing trend of using commercial technologies for military purposes. This creates new challenges for regulators and companies, which must balance commercial interests with national security requirements. The question of how to prevent unauthorized use of civilian technologies in weapons remains unresolved.
