iPhone owners can use their smartphone as a white noise generator thanks to the built-in Background Sounds feature. Introduced in iOS 15, this option allows users to play various soundscapes, including natural noises and white noise of different tones. Initially, six options were available: rain, stream, ocean waves, as well as bright, balanced, and dark white noise. With the release of iOS 18 and iOS 26, the list expanded to include new sounds like campfire noise, nighttime ambiance, rain on a roof, and café hum.

The Background Sounds feature is integrated into the iPhone’s accessibility settings but can be quickly activated via the Control Center. To do this, users need to add the corresponding element to the Control Center, enabling instant access to the sounds. Users can also configure playback to continue alongside other media, such as music or podcasts, and set a timer for automatic shutdown. This makes the feature convenient not only for parents but also for those who use white noise to improve concentration or relaxation.

For more advanced sound customization, iOS 26 introduced additional options, including an equalizer and the ability to set a precise auto-shutdown timer. The equalizer allows users to adjust tone and balance, while the timer enables setting an exact end time for playback. These features make Background Sounds a versatile tool for creating a comfortable sound environment in any setting, whether for a child’s sleep, work in a noisy office, or relaxation at home.
