How Engineers Are Reshaping the Digital World for Children’s Safety

Digital platforms that children interact with daily were designed without accounting for their psychological and age-related characteristics. Modern systems are optimized to retain attention, creating risks of addiction and negative impacts on personal development. Engineers and technical specialists now view online safety not as an abstract discussion but as a design challenge requiring a systematic approach and ethical solutions.

In response to these challenges, governments worldwide have begun implementing regulations to protect minors. The European Union and the United Kingdom have led the integration of safe design principles into legislation. Brazil and Indonesia were the first in their regions to adopt norms considering users' age-specific needs. Australia restricts access to harmful content, while U.S. states are introducing their own rules, including California’s Age-Appropriate Design Code Act.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has spent over a decade developing standards for a safer digital environment. In 2021, the first age-appropriate design standard was adopted, offering a structured approach to designing with children’s rights in mind. Today, IEEE collaborates with governments to implement technically sound solutions in ethical design, algorithmic transparency, and data protection.

Experts emphasize that protecting children online requires more than content filtering—it demands a fundamental redesign of digital systems. Engineers’ decisions shape the values and incentives embedded in platforms, which is especially critical for young users. Without coordinated action, regulation will lag behind technology, leaving children vulnerable to preventable risks.
