Enthusiasts continue to find new ways to repurpose outdated gadgets. This time, a Reddit user under the nickname someones427 demonstrated how old Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatches can be adapted into a motorcycle navigation system. The project solves the problem of limited space on a bike's handlebars, where it's difficult to mount a full-sized display.
To implement the idea, the author used a 3D-printed case to protect the watch and secure it to the handlebars. The key component of the mount was a magnetic holder from the original charging device, allowing the gadget to be securely fastened without additional accessories. However, stable display operation requires a constant power connection, which presents certain inconveniences.
Despite the simplicity of the hardware, the software aspect of the project is not yet perfect. The author notes issues with map synchronization between the watch and smartphone, as well as incorrect auto-rotate screen functionality. These drawbacks may hinder comfortable use of the navigator while riding. Nevertheless, the community has already suggested several solutions to these problems.
The idea of repurposing old smartwatches into specialized devices opens new possibilities for DIY projects. The compact size and round display of the Galaxy Watch 4 fit seamlessly into the design of motorcycle instrument panels. If developers manage to eliminate current software limitations, such solutions could become popular among bikers and car enthusiasts.
