California Accuses AT&T of Deceiving FCC Over Legacy Phone Network Shutdown

California regulators have sharply criticized telecommunications provider AT&T, accusing the company of submitting false data to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC). In a petition filed with the FCC, AT&T requested permission to decommission its outdated copper phone network, claiming it would not pose issues for subscribers. However, state authorities allege the carrier deliberately downplayed potential risks for users, particularly in remote areas.

According to California regulators, AT&T failed to account for the fact that many rural residents could lose connectivity, as alternative technologies like VoIP or mobile networks are either unavailable or unreliable in those regions. Additionally, the legacy infrastructure is still used for emergency services and security systems, making its shutdown potentially hazardous.

The conflict between AT&T and California authorities has escalated amid a global trend of phasing out outdated communication technologies. Operators worldwide are transitioning to more modern and cost-effective solutions, but regulators insist on ensuring uninterrupted service for all users, including those in areas with limited infrastructure.

The FCC has yet to make a final decision on AT&T’s petition. If the regulator sides with the carrier, it could set a precedent for other states and accelerate the decommissioning of traditional phone networks in the U.S.
