Climate Tech Companies Go Public: Prospects and Challenges

The climate tech market is showing robust growth as companies specializing in clean energy generation solutions actively go public. This trend is driven by rising electricity demand, particularly from data centers and IT infrastructure, fueling investor interest in innovative projects.

Fervo Energy, founded in 2017, raised approximately $1.5 billion in investments ahead of its IPO. The company employs hydraulic fracturing technology to create conditions for geothermal energy, overcoming limitations of traditional methods. Its first commercial project, Cape Station in Utah, is expected to deliver up to 500 MW of capacity. The first phase will launch in October, with two more phases slated for January 2027. Proceeds from the IPO will help scale the business: Fervo already holds contracts for over 600 MW of energy supply and rights to sites with potential output exceeding 40 GW.

Another market player, X-energy, is advancing small modular nuclear reactor technologies. The company develops high-temperature gas-cooled reactors using helium as a coolant and fuel encased in granules. Each reactor can generate 80 MW of electricity—far less than traditional nuclear plants but sufficient to provide stable power for critical facilities, including data centers. X-energy’s IPO was successful, with its stock price rising post-listing. Notably, the company had planned its IPO for 2023 but delayed it due to unfavorable market conditions.

Both companies face challenges tied to high construction and drilling costs. For instance, the Cape Station project is estimated at $7 per kilowatt—cheaper than new nuclear plants but pricier than gas-fired power stations. Nevertheless, their technologies could play a pivotal role in ensuring stable energy supply for IT infrastructure amid surging electricity demand.
