NASA's Psyche spacecraft, launched in October 2023, successfully completed an intermediate phase of its mission involving a flyby near Mars. During this maneuver, the probe utilized the planet's gravitational field to adjust its trajectory while also calibrating its scientific instruments. Agency specialists note that the data obtained will optimize equipment performance before reaching the target asteroid in 2029.

The primary objective of the Psyche mission is to explore the eponymous asteroid located in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. Scientists believe this metal-dominated object may represent the core of an ancient protoplanet. Studying its composition and structure will enhance understanding of processes that occurred during the early stages of the solar system's formation.

During the Mars flyby, the probe captured a series of images of the planet using its multispectral camera. These images not only confirmed the functionality of the equipment but also provided scientists with additional data on the Red Planet's surface and atmosphere. NASA emphasized that such maneuvers are standard practice for interplanetary missions, enabling fuel savings and improved navigation accuracy.
