Cryptocurrency Pearl Sparks GPU Mining Frenzy, but Profitability Already Declining

Pearl, developed by Pearl Research Labs, stands out from traditional cryptocurrencies with its Proof-of-Useful-Work consensus mechanism. Instead of conventional hashing, the network employs matrix computations similar to those used in training and inference for artificial intelligence models. This innovation has attracted both miners and AI-focused companies.

A partnership with cloud provider Together AI further fueled interest in the project. The company offered discounted access to the Gemma-4-31B-it-pearl model, partially offsetting costs through PRL token emissions. However, despite the creators' optimism, most computational power used for mining remains underutilized—miners perform inference without real-world queries, leaving results unused.

The bulk of Pearl mining relies on rented cloud GPUs, including RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 units deployed on platforms like RunPod and Vast.ai. The surge in participants led to a rapid increase in network difficulty, cutting profitability by 49% in a short time. While mining is officially optimized for server-grade accelerators like H100 and H200, enthusiasts have adapted the algorithm for consumer GPUs.

Trading of PRL tokens is currently limited to lesser-known exchanges with low liquidity, such as SafeTrade and MEXC. Given that block rewards will continue to decrease and network difficulty will rise, experts predict further declines in profitability. This makes a repeat of past GPU shortages, like those seen in previous mining booms, unlikely.
