The International Mathematical Union (IMU) has warned of the negative consequences of tech giants' growing influence on mathematical research. In an official statement, the organization notes that commercial interests of IT companies often conflict with academic values such as open scientific data and freedom of research topics.

IMU experts emphasize that corporate funding of AI and applied mathematics projects may shift focus from fundamental problems to commercially applicable tasks. This creates a risk of reducing the quality of theoretical developments, which traditionally underpin technological breakthroughs.

The document also expresses concern about universities' and research institutes' growing dependence on grants and investments from major tech corporations. Such a situation may limit opportunities for young scientists to pursue promising but less market-demand research directions.
