Matter 1.6 Introduces Joint Fabric: A Unified Network for Smart Homes

The Matter smart home standard has received a major update to version 1.6, unveiled at the Unify conference in Austin. The key innovation is the Joint Fabric feature, which allows users to create a unified network for all devices, accessible across multiple ecosystems such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and others. Users no longer need to share devices between applications; adding them once makes them available across all authorized platforms.

Previously, each ecosystem managed its own network (fabric), complicating interactions between devices. Joint Fabric addresses this issue by merging networks into one, giving users full control over access. For instance, permissions for any platform can be revoked at any time without losing device access in other applications.

Matter 1.6 also introduces NFC support for quick device setup. Instead of scanning a QR code, users can simply tap their smartphone to a device to initiate pairing. This is particularly useful for setting up smart bulbs or switches before powering them on. Additionally, the update includes standardized thermostat recommendations to avoid conflicts between automations across different platforms.

Despite these advancements, experts note that the adoption of new features may take time due to slow platform manufacturer adaptation. However, Joint Fabric represents a step toward realizing Matter’s original vision: creating a truly universal and convenient smart home standard.
