Meta and Reliance Launch India’s First AI Data Center

Meta and Reliance Industries have announced the launch of India’s first AI-focused data center, designed to support artificial intelligence workloads. The 168-megawatt facility will be built in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and will become part of Meta’s global AI infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed within two years, with potential for future expansion.

India is rapidly emerging as a key market for AI infrastructure. Over the past five years, the country’s data center capacity has surged from 375 megawatts in 2020 to an estimated 1.5 gigawatts in 2025. Analysts project this figure could reach 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade, driven by the growth of cloud services and AI workloads. The government supports such investments with tax incentives for foreign cloud providers.

Reliance will oversee the entire data center lifecycle, from design and construction to integrating renewable energy sources and operational management. Meta, in turn, will cover energy and water supply costs. The companies have also secured contracts for nearly 1 gigawatt of renewable energy to power the facility.

This initiative builds on Meta’s and Reliance’s long-standing collaboration, which began with investments in Jio Platforms in 2020. Since then, the partners have expanded their cooperation into digital services, enterprise AI, and now AI infrastructure. The new data center will further solidify India’s role as a leading global center for AI infrastructure.
