Meta* Disables AI Fake Generation Feature Using Instagram* Photos

Meta* announced the temporary disabling of a feature that allowed users to generate AI-powered images using public Instagram* accounts. The tool, introduced earlier this week, enabled users to create AI content by simply mentioning an account in their request. However, within days of its launch, Meta* decided to suspend the feature due to widespread criticism.

The primary concern with the new tool was the lack of consent from account owners for using their photos in AI-generated images. While Meta* provided an opt-out option via privacy settings, experts argued this did not fundamentally resolve the issue. User rights organizations expressed concerns over potential abuses, including deepfake creation for sextortion and other fraudulent schemes.

Meta* representatives stated the feature was initially designed as a creative tool but acknowledged its implementation fell short of expectations. An official statement read: "We heard user feedback and decided to temporarily disable the feature." Earlier, the U.S. Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) advised its members to opt out of AI image generation and published guidance on adjusting privacy settings.

Cybersecurity experts emphasize that such tools require stricter oversight and transparent consent mechanisms. The protection of personal data and image rights is becoming increasingly critical amid advancements in artificial intelligence.
