Microsoft Unveils Seven New AI Models at Build 2024 Conference

At the opening of Build 2024, Microsoft announced the release of seven new artificial intelligence models, with MAI-Thinking-1 drawing particular attention as the company’s first model designed for logical reasoning. Trained on commercially licensed data, the model demonstrated superior performance in independent tests, outperforming competing solutions, including those from Anthropic.

MAI-Thinking-1 supports multi-step tasks and is available in a private preview via the Microsoft Foundry platform. The lineup also includes MAI-Code-1, a code-generation model optimized for GitHub and integrated into Copilot and VS Code. These developments reflect Microsoft’s push to strengthen its leadership in AI for developers.

Other innovations include MAI-Image-2.5, an image generation and editing model that has already ranked third on the LM Arena Leaderboard. Microsoft also introduced updated versions of its voice recognition (MAI-Voice-2) and transcription (MAI-Transcribe-1.5) models, supporting dozens of languages. All new models feature built-in watermarking mechanisms for enhanced security.

Efficiency was a key focus, with Microsoft claiming a tenfold reduction in the cost of using some models compared to competitors. Access to the new solutions is available through platforms like Fireworks AI, Baseten, and Open Router. Additionally, the company announced a collaboration with Mayo Clinic to develop a specialized AI model for healthcare.
