Microsoft Develops Next-Gen Android Devices Powered by AI Agents

Microsoft has introduced Project Solara—a hardware platform concept where artificial intelligence is embedded at the architectural level, rather than as an add-on to existing features. The company has developed reference devices, including a desktop display resembling the Google Nest Hub and a wearable ID badge, to showcase the technology’s potential to manufacturers.

At the heart of Solara is the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform, compatible with AOSP. Instead of fixed applications, the platform enables dynamic interactions with multiple specialized AI agents, each optimized for specific tasks. The device interface is also adaptive, with the system autonomously selecting the optimal way to display information based on context.

The project is focused on the enterprise sector. Microsoft is already collaborating with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop chips that will power the platform under a "from chip to cloud" approach. While it remains unclear which manufacturers will adopt Solara for commercial devices, significant time may pass before the technology sees real-world deployment.
