Microsoft Aims to Create Dependency on Its AI Assistant Scout

Microsoft has introduced its new AI assistant, Scout, capable of autonomously performing various tasks. However, a leak of internal documents published by 404 Media has revealed controversial phrasing in the product’s development strategy. In the section titled “ClawPilot Overall Plan” (Scout’s working name before launch), one phase is explicitly called “Make people dependent.”

Microsoft representatives quickly responded to the publication, stating that Scout’s purpose is not to increase screen time but to enhance user productivity. In an official comment to Android Authority, the company emphasized its commitment to responsible AI principles and user control over interactions with the tool. Nevertheless, the phrasing in the leaked documents contradicts these public statements.

The dependency on AI tools is becoming an increasingly discussed topic. Research indicates that chatbots and autonomous assistants can trigger destructive behavior in vulnerable users. While Scout is positioned as a work tool, the emphasis on fostering dependency raises concerns about the long-term consequences of adopting such technologies.

Experts note that many IT companies use mechanisms to increase user engagement but rarely declare this openly. In Microsoft’s case, the situation is complicated by the fact that dependency-creation plans were documented internally, casting doubt on the sincerity of public assurances.
