Microsoft Releases Coreutils for Windows: Native Linux Commands in Windows Environment

At the annual Build 2026 conference, Microsoft unveiled Coreutils for Windows—an initiative aimed at integrating popular Linux command-line utilities into the Windows operating system. The project allows commands like grep, awk, and sed to run as native applications, eliminating the need for Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) or third-party solutions.

According to company representatives, Coreutils for Windows is designed to streamline developers' workflows who frequently work in mixed environments. Commands familiar to Linux users will now be available in Windows without additional configurations, reducing adaptation time and accelerating task execution.
