NASA and Prada Develop High-Tech Thermal Underwear for Lunar Mission

Axiom Space and fashion house Prada have unveiled the high-tech LCVG (Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment), which astronauts will wear under AxEMU spacesuits during the Artemis IV mission. This equipment is critical for maintaining optimal body temperature and crew comfort in the lunar environment.

The LCVG features a network of tubes circulating chilled water to dissipate excess body heat. Unlike previous models, the new suit includes a backup cooling system in case of primary system failure. Additionally, the LCVG integrates a ventilation system that supplies oxygen to the spacesuit helmet and removes carbon dioxide.

NASA’s collaboration with Prada is not the agency’s first venture into merging high technology with design. Previously, NASA funded the BioSuit project, developed by MIT Professor Dava Newman in partnership with architect Guillermo Trotti, also aimed at creating innovative astronaut gear.
