NASA is intensifying preparations to establish a permanent lunar base, scheduling three key missions for 2024. The first phase will involve delivering scientific equipment and payloads, including collaborative projects with international partners.
One of the central missions is Moon Base III, which will deploy the Nova-C Trinity lander from Intuitive Machines to the Moon. The primary payload is the Lunar Vertex instrument, designed to study lunar swirls. These bright patches on the lunar surface are of significant interest to scientists, as their analysis will provide new insights into lunar surface formation processes and material behavior in space environments.
The project involves not only NASA but also the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute. Joint efforts aim to expand scientific knowledge about the Moon and prepare for long-term human presence on its surface.
These missions mark a crucial step toward realizing ambitious plans for lunar infrastructure, which could serve as a launchpad for future space exploration.
