Nashville Zoo Opposes Construction of Data Center Near Enclosures

DC Blox has applied to build a data center in Nashville, but the project has faced resistance from the local zoo. Zoo management stated they had planned to use a 23.5-acre portion of the site for an educational and conservation center. The land is owned by MarketStreet Enterprises, with whom the zoo had been negotiating a purchase.

The zoo’s primary concerns revolve around the potential negative impact of the data center on animals. Key risks include noise and light pollution, increased energy consumption (up to 50 MW), and degraded water quality. Rare species, such as clouded leopards, which are sensitive to mechanical noise, are of particular concern. The project also involves constructing a dedicated substation and using a closed-loop cooling system.

DC Blox maintains that the data center will not be used for AI training and will not overburden local resources. Meanwhile, Nashville authorities are considering new restrictions on data centers, including a ban on facilities exceeding 500,000 square feet. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the construction application was submitted before the land purchase was finalized, raising questions from the city’s mayor.
