Noctua: Over Half of PC Cases Report Incorrect Cooler Dimensions

Noctua, renowned for its high-performance cooling systems, conducted an independent study on PC case compatibility. Testing over 100 models from various manufacturers revealed that in 56% of cases, the stated dimensions for CPU cooler installation did not match real-world measurements. Discrepancies ranged from -3.5 mm to +10 mm, potentially causing significant challenges during PC assembly.

In some instances, cases were larger than specified. For example, the NZXT H2 Flow officially supports coolers up to 75 mm in height but can accommodate up to 79 mm. Similarly, the Thermaltake TR100 exceeds its stated dimensions by 2.7 mm, while the Corsair Frame 4000D offers 10 mm more space than claimed. This allows for the installation of more powerful coolers, though users may overlook this opportunity by relying on official data.

However, there are also cases where real dimensions are smaller than stated. The Asus Prime AP201 is 1.7 mm shorter, and the Lian Li B4-mATX is 3.5 mm smaller. This creates a risk of purchasing components that may not fit or prevent the case from closing properly. Such errors are particularly critical for compact mini-ITX cases, where every millimeter matters.

Noctua recommends measuring cases manually before purchasing components or using verified compatibility tools. The company has updated its database to include its own measurement results. However, it remains unclear whether similar inaccuracies extend to other case parameters, such as GPU length or PSU dimensions.
