New Smart Ring Signal Ring Promises Cuff-Free Blood Pressure Measurement

Startup Vital Signals has introduced the new Signal Ring, positioned as the first wearable device capable of accurately measuring blood pressure without a traditional cuff. Developers claim the gadget operates 4–5 times faster than conventional blood pressure monitors and meets international accuracy standards. The device has already undergone clinical trials with 451 volunteers, with further research ongoing.

Signal Ring employs photoplethysmography (PPG) technology with high-speed sensors that capture blood flow in fine detail. Special algorithms process the data, separating blood pressure readings from other physiological signals. However, cardiologists note that PPG sensors have limitations: they are sensitive to motion, skin tone, limb temperature, and heart rhythm irregularities, which may affect measurement accuracy.

The market already features wearables that monitor cardiovascular indicators, such as the Oura Ring or Apple Watch. However, these devices do not claim to measure blood pressure directly, only tracking indirect signs of potential issues. Traditional blood pressure monitors, like the Omron HeartGuide, use a cuff for precise measurements but are inconvenient for continuous wear. Signal Ring could be a breakthrough if it proves reliable in real-world conditions.

The device is available for pre-order at $399 with no additional subscription required. First shipments are expected in October. It is important to note that Signal Ring has not yet received FDA certification. Experts recommend consulting a physician before using such devices to integrate them into a comprehensive hypertension management strategy.
